Leo Finch grimaced at the sight of the food court. It was packed. More so than it had any right to be in the middle of the week, not over any holiday. Still, he pushed his way unerringly to the table that had been where that woman had been tangling her hand in his father’s beard.

There was a man sitting there, green hat atop his head, gray trench-coat crunched up around him.

Leo was three steps away, planning on making some excuse to inspect the table, the man when the other rose and placed a stone, carved like a heart on the table.

He faded back into the crowd, and Leo pushed himself the rest of the way through. The stone heart had a single question engraved into its surface.

“Can hearts of stone still bleed?” Leo read, then snapped his head up, searching for the man. A taunt. Another poke from the one messing with him. A trap, a game. His heart beat faster even as his stomach sank. All these innocent people. He had to play along, keep them safe until he could take the man down cleanly.

He spotted the green hat, a beacon above the crowds. His urge to charge after the man stalled. Beyond a blue hat appeared, bobbing above the heads of the crowd, the two on a path to converge in front of the Meeting Barn. But what truly stopped him was the small blond woman, trying to catch up to the blue hat-wearing man. Julie Farlow.
